Profile
Protein Engineer, Bioprocess Scientist and Educator
Dr. Muhammad Islam Khan specialises in the intersection of protein engineering and downstream processing. He has played a significant role in developing therapeutic proteins with clinical impact, including interferon, insulin, G-CSF, IL-1Ra antagonist, interleukin-29, IGF-1 and EGF, covering design, optimisation, purification and expression in yeast, bacteria and green algae.
A notable achievement is his refinement of the anti-EGFR antibody scFv, a component in targeted cancer therapies, alongside anticancer protein studies exploring how these proteins combat cancer cells.
Before joining CEMB, he worked at Shafigluco Chem on production of soluble rice protein and maltodextrin, and at AB Mauri Fermentation Pakistan on food fermentation technology, developing a comprehensive understanding of techniques that optimise taste, texture and nutritional value.
