Research at CEMB

Medical & Environmental Biotechnology

The lab develops molecular and plant-based approaches to challenges in human health, agriculture and environmental biotechnology.

Laboratory overview

From biological discovery to practical solutions.

Research brings together molecular biology, medicinal-plant screening and applied microbiology to identify useful bioactive compounds and translate them into diagnostic, therapeutic and agricultural applications.

Research programme

What the lab works on

The programme spans discovery, laboratory validation and the development of tools and formulations for real-world use.

  1. 01

    Molecular cancer research

MicroRNA-based gene-silencing approaches are studied in multidrug-resistant cancer cell lines.

  2. 02

    Medicinal plant discovery

Indigenous plants are screened for secondary metabolites with potential value in medicine and agriculture.

  3. 03

    Bioactive extracts

Plant extracts are prepared and evaluated as leads for biologically active molecules.

  4. 04

    Phytochemical analysis

Active plant extracts are separated and analysed to identify compounds linked with anticancer, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.

  5. 05

    Plant-based biopesticides

Botanical formulations are developed for the control of agricultural and household pests.

  6. 06

    Food preservation

Plant-derived materials are assessed and formulated as potential food preservatives.

  7. 07

    Rapid detection tools

Dipstick assays are developed to assess insect resistance in Bt crops and detect pathogens in samples.

  8. 08

    Bacteriophage therapeutics

Bacteriophages are investigated for potential use against multidrug-resistant bacteria.
