Stem Cell Research

The lab harnesses the regenerative potential of adult stem cells to repair damaged skin, liver, cartilage, spinal cord, eye, and pancreatic tissues, and is translating this research into clinical trials.

Laboratory overview

From biological discovery to practical solutions.

Research isolates stem cells from bone marrow, adipose tissue, umbilical cord and other sources, combining them with scaffolds, growth factors and antioxidants to improve their survival and therapeutic efficacy in animal disease models — with clinical-grade trials now under way for skin, diabetic wound, ocular and COVID-19 applications.

Research programme

What the lab works on

The programme spans discovery, laboratory validation and the development of tools and formulations for real-world use.

  1. 01

    Skin & wound regeneration

Stem cell and platelet-rich plasma combinations for burns, diabetic wounds and ageing-associated wounds.

  2. 02

    Liver fibrosis therapy

Stem cell-based approaches to repair liver fibrosis and cirrhosis in chemically induced disease models.

  3. 03

    Cartilage & joint regeneration

Chondrocyte and stem cell therapies investigated for osteoarthritis and cartilage repair.

  4. 04

    Clinical translation

Clinical-grade Wharton's jelly and lipoaspirate stem cell trials for skin, diabetic wound, ocular and COVID-19 treatment.
