Profile

Forensic DNA Scientist, Geneticist and Educator

Dr. Muhammad Shafique completed his MSc in Zoology from Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan and his MPhil and PhD in Molecular Biology/Forensic DNA typing from CEMB, University of the Punjab. He trained as a forensic DNA scientist on STR analysis at Strand Analytical Laboratories, Indianapolis, USA, in 2006.

He served as forensic DNA scientist and deputy DNA technical manager (2004-2014) at the Forensic Services Lab, CAMB, solving thousands of criminal cases and providing court testimony as a forensic DNA expert. He currently leads the forensic lab at CEMB as group in-charge/supervisor, and from 2022-2023 was an honorary postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Forensic Science, University of Technology Sydney, Australia.

He developed the first multiplex system for simultaneous detection of autosomal STRs and Y-STRs in forensic DNA typing, winning the Technology Award at the 5th Invention to Innovation Summit 2016. He has filed patents for STR multiplex PCR systems, contributes STR allelic data to NIST, STRidER and YHRD databases, and is a member of the National Forensic Science Commission of Pakistan.
