Profile
Plant Genomics Scientist, Molecular Biologist and Educator
Dr. Sameera Hassan joined CEMB in 1997 after a national-competition Masters selection in Zoology. Her early research involved phage display of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ac toxin protein, before she moved into the Biopharmaceutical lab to work on recombinant human erythropoietin expression in E. coli and Chinese Hamster Ovary cells, and later studied multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus from bovine mastitis samples.
In 2010 she enrolled in the MPhil-leading-to-PhD programme; her PhD, notified in 2016, was titled "Cellular Characterization, Cloning & Expression of Universal Stress Protein Gene (GUSP1) in Cotton and its Role in Drought Tolerance." Since then her work has focused on isolating, cloning and characterising abiotic and biotic stress-tolerance genes for transgenic cotton development.
Two PhDs and 15 MPhils have completed their theses under her supervision so far, and a total of 10 full-length genes and 8 partial cDNAs were submitted to NCBI during 2022-2023.
